WHAT TO DO

Fredericksburg has many things to do, and many things to see within a reasonable driving radius.  We’re close to the Willow City Loop, renowned for its wildflowers during the spring.  We’re close to Tin Star Ranch for those that like to participate in cowboy action shooting events.  Fredericksburg proper has museums, restaurants and shopping galore.  We recognize opinions are like belly buttons, (everybody’s got one), but we’ll be happy to tell you what we like, and where we go.

Upstream from the falls, look at one of the cabins.

At the ranch:  relax, sleep, meditate, nap in the hammock, cook outdoors, astronomy, sleep, stargaze, sleep, relax, sit on the porch, and watch the creek, wildlife photography, scenery watching, landscape photography, sleep, write, paint (see section on Art Workshops), crossword puzzles, sew, horseshoes, washers, darts, fly a kite, walking, hiking, wading, inner tube floating, (bring your own tube, and remember the snakes), bird watching, photography, (no cow tipping), bike riding (on Crabapple Road) read, watch videos, sleep, relax, conversing with the host and hostess, talk (deep meaningful conversation) with your spouse, think, relax, sleep, meditate, and relax.  In other words, GETAWAY.

In town:  Pioneer Museum, Nimitz Museum, Ft. Martin Scott museum (my wife played there as a girl, one of her friends lived there before it was a museum); shopping (You must stop at Dooley’s, or you haven’t been to Fredericksburg), restaurants (ask and we’ll tell you where we eat), bars and places to tipple.  Fredericksburg always has something going on, and the capable and friendly crew at the Convention and Visitors Bureau can brief you on what’s happening on any particular weekend.  If you can’t find something to do, and some way to spend your time and money, you’re relaxing at the ranch.

Day trips:  Within a reasonably short drive (90 minutes), you can see Austin (capital, and don’t miss the Texas History Museum) or San Antonio (the Alamo, and the American Fighter Aces Museum), or great little towns like Llano, Mason, (wonderful town square, and old movie house) Junction, Bandera, Boerne, New Braunfels, Sisterdale,  San Marcos (Aquarena Springs), Comfort, Luckenbach, Kerrville (great Cowboy Artists Museum), or Ingram (neat shopping and monthly auction of anything you can imagine).

Traveling on:  If you’re headed north, and just dawdling, we recommend stopping at the Lake Brownwood guest cabins on beautiful Lake Brownwood in central Texas.  Call 915-784-7729, and tell’em A Getaway Ranch sent you.

OPTIONAL SERVICES, TOURS, AND TRAVEL TIPS

The following optional services, tours, and packages.

By prior arrangement, we can arrange horseback riding.  If you own your own horse, and want to bring it, let us know, and we’ll discuss options and available services.

By prior arrangement, we also off Cowboy Campfire Suppers, complete with hayride, campfire cooking and sing-along of the history of Texas in song and story, gunfight reenactment, Texas Revolution sightseeing tours, starting with the Alamo, and following the path of the Runaway Scrape to the plains of San Jacinto, day tours of Austin, Texas, including a tour of the capital building, lunch at the historic Driskill Hotel, and a visit to the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. For western history buffs, we offer a tour of the scenes of the historic "Hoodoo War", a real Texas feud fought in neighboring Mason County, Texas, in the 1870's. Other tours and event may be planned according to needs and wishes of visitors. Just ask Jim Chapman for details.

Jim Chapman is an amateur military historian, and has a lot of inside knowledge about the exhibits of the Nimitz Museum, and the history of the Pacific War.  Special guided tours of the Nimitz are available by prior arrangement.

By prior arrangement, we can offer a five day guided tour of the Texas Revolution, from the opening shots at Gonzalez, to the final victory at San Jacinto (includes guided tour of USS Texas, the only dreadnought class battleship still in commission, and the only one which took part in both World Wars).  Visitors can follow the movements of troops, and stand where the Texicans stood when they won their independence.  Texas is the only state in the United States that was an independent nation before it became a state (and has the right to subdivide into five smaller states).

By prior arrangement, we can give you a wildflower tour, and box lunch on the ground, along Landrum Creek.

By prior arrangement, for those who own firearms, or want to fire western weapons, pistols, revolvers, (including black powder revolvers), shotguns, and rifles, we can make special arrangements for target practice, or participation in a cowboy action shoot competition.
